It would have saved a ton of hours on the Hornets. Those airframes had a ton of life left too retired prematurely. You can’t hunt subs in the middle of the ocean effectively from land or from an SH-60. The engines are still flying. A-10’S use them they were perfect for them. Always thought it was a great idea. Guys this aircraft wasn’t new or shiny enough and the Navy had the money or thought they did to get a new one. Hell, the A-6 could have been kept around longer just as a tanker.

They were talking about pulling some of these out of the desert, revamping them, and sending them back out to the fleet for a couple of years until a replacement could be developed. The estimate was through 2019. But, from what I read, they chose instead to use the OV-22 Osprey and some other types to fill the role. Not sure if anyone notices this, but the military ( and no doubt the defense industry) is not in favor of re-instituting older equipment, especially once it’s been retired.
